The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts is Philadelphia's principal concert venue and the home of the world-famous Philadelphia Orchestra. Located on the 'Avenue of the Arts' on South Broad Street, it opened in 2001 to designs by the architect Rafael Viñoly, strikingly spanned by a vaulted glass roof. Its main auditorium – originally Verizon Hall and, since 2024, renamed Marian Anderson Hall in honour of the Philadelphia-born contralto – seats around 2,500 and is known for its warm, wood-clad architecture and carefully tuned acoustics. The complex also includes the smaller, flexible Perelman Theater. As the city's cultural hub, the Kimmel Center brings together orchestral concerts, chamber music, dance and touring productions, and together with the neighbouring Academy of Music forms the heart of Philadelphia's musical life.
The main concert hall's interior is shaped in the form of a cello.
