The Atlanta Opera, founded in its present form in 1979, is the leading opera company of the US Southeast and performs in the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, which opened in 2007. Under its artistic leadership the company has developed an internationally noted profile. During the COVID-19 pandemic it drew national attention when it safely performed operas for audiences in a purpose-built circus tent – the "Big Tent". Alongside the grand repertoire, The Atlanta Opera also cultivates contemporary and chamber-opera formats through its "Discoveries" series.
