The Teatro Municipale Giuseppe Verdi is the opera house of Salerno in Campania. After decades of dispute over its site and cost, construction began in 1864 to designs by the engineer Antonino D'Amora, working with the architect Giuseppe Menichini. The theatre opened on 15 April 1872 with Verdi's Rigoletto, although it only took the composer's name after his death in 1901. The auditorium is a nineteenth-century timber structure with four tiers of boxes and a gallery, modelled on the Teatro San Carlo in Naples and richly decorated with frescoes. As a teatro di tradizione, the house is devoted above all to the grand Italian operatic repertoire, alongside ballet, concerts and drama, in the historic centre of the city on the Gulf of Salerno.
In the Middle Ages, Salerno was home to the Schola Medica Salernitana, Europe's first medical school.
