Teatro Amilcare Ponchielli

Cremona, Italy

The Teatro Amilcare Ponchielli is the opera house of Cremona, the city of violin-making and home of Stradivari. Built in its present form in 1808, it was named after the regionally born composer Amilcare Ponchielli. The neoclassical auditorium with four tiers of boxes ranks among the most beautiful in Lombardy. As a teatro di tradizione, the Ponchielli cultivates the grand operatic repertoire and is also a venue of the Monteverdi Festival, dedicated to the Cremona-born founder of opera. Within the OperaLombardia network, the house develops productions together with other Lombard theatres, combining a rich musical tradition with a contemporary programme.
