Teatro Alighieri

Ravenna, Italy

The Teatro Alighieri is the opera house of Ravenna, named after Dante Alighieri, who died and is buried in the city. Opened in 1852, it was designed by the Venetian architects Tomaso and Giovanni Battista Meduna, who had previously worked on the rebuilding of La Fenice – and the auditorium is sumptuous to match. As a teatro di tradizione, the house offers a varied season of opera, dance and concerts and is a central venue of the renowned Ravenna Festival, which each summer turns the Byzantine mosaic city into an international meeting point for music. The Alighieri thus unites historic heritage with a cosmopolitan programme.
