The Teatro Massimo Bellini is the opera house of Catania and one of Sicily's most magnificent stages. Opened in 1890 with Vincenzo Bellini's "Norma", it is dedicated to the bel canto composer born in Catania, whose name still fills the city with pride. The richly decorated, late-Romantic auditorium is regarded as acoustically outstanding. Set in the heart of the Baroque old town within sight of Mount Etna, the Bellini forms the musical heart of eastern Sicily and cultivates in particular the Italian operatic repertoire of the 19th century. As a teatro di tradizione it combines regional identity with artistic ambition and a lively concert and ballet season.
