Teatro Carlo Felice

Genua, Italy

The Teatro Carlo Felice on Piazza De Ferrari is the principal opera house of Genoa. Designed by the local architect Carlo Barabino, it opened on 7 April 1828 with Bellini's Bianca e Fernando; its auditorium held about 2,500 people in five tiers of boxes. In 1892, for the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America, it gave the premiere of Alberto Franchetti's Cristoforo Colombo. During the Second World War a naval shell in 1941 and air raids up to 1944 left only the outer walls standing, and for over forty years performances were held in a temporary venue. After a design by Carlo Scarpa was halted by his death, Aldo Rossi rebuilt the theatre with a modern interior and recreated parts of the facade; it reopened in 1991. The main hall seats up to 2,000, a smaller hall 200.
