The Starlight Express Theater Bochum is one of the most spectacular musical venues in the world — specially built for Andrew Lloyd Webber's roller-skate musical Starlight Express and opened in 1988. The house with around 1,700 seats features a 280-metre roller skating track running through the entire auditorium; the performers glide past audiences on skates just metres away. Starlight Express, with over 18 million tickets sold, is the most successful musical in Germany of all time and the only show running continuously at its original venue since the premiere. The unique theatre architecture is one of a kind worldwide. With over 18 million tickets sold, it is the most successful musical in German history.
The roller-skating performers reach up to 40 km/h on the ramps — injuries are so frequent that the house maintains its own physiotherapy department.
