Schauspielhaus Bochum

Bochum, Germany

The Bochum Playhouse is among the most important drama theatres in Germany and gained legendary renown under directors Peter Zadek (1972–1977) and Claus Peymann (1979–1986). In this era Bochum became the centre of a provocative, socially critical director's theatre that lastingly shaped the West German stage landscape — the "Bochum theatre revolution" drew attention from across the country. With a large and a small auditorium, the house lies in the heart of the Ruhr region and maintains to this day an ambitious repertoire between classics and contemporary drama. Under changing directorships, the Playhouse has remained one of the most distinctive and closely watched stages in the German-speaking world.

In the 1970s Peter Zadek engaged actor Hans Mahnke and broke taboos — his drastic Shakespeare productions divided audiences and critics.
