The Prinz Regent Theater in Bochum is a renowned independent theatre in the Ruhr region with its own permanent ensemble — a rarity in the otherwise project-based independent scene. Housed in a former cinema in the Wiemelhausen district, it has established itself since the early 1990s as a production house for sophisticated contemporary drama and also offers independent groups a venue. The house exemplifies the unusually dense theatre landscape of the Ruhr region, in which, alongside the large municipal theatres, numerous independent stages with their own artistic signature exist. Through ensemble cultivation, co-productions, and a focus on contemporary material, the Prinz Regent has earned a firm place in the supraregional independent scene.
Bochum alone supports, besides its large playhouse, several distinctive independent stages — a density of theatres with few equals in Europe.
