The Nuremberg State Theatre is the largest multi-genre theatre in Bavaria outside Munich, uniting opera, ballet, drama, and concerts under one roof. The magnificent opera house on Richard-Wagner-Platz opened in 1905 in the Art Nouveau style and, with its historic auditorium acoustics and three tiers of boxes, is regarded as one of the most beautiful theatre buildings in Bavaria. The house is home to the Nuremberg State Philharmonic and produces a broad repertoire from Baroque opera to contemporary music theatre. Nuremberg as the setting of Wagner's "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" — Wagner's only comedy — cultivates a special connection to the composer, and the State Theatre regularly takes up this cultural heritage in its productions.
During the Nazi era the house was misused for propaganda performances at the Nuremberg Rallies — after 1945 it confronted its history with critical productions.
