The Meistersingerhalle Nuremberg, opened in 1963, is the city's central concert and congress hall and home to the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra. The sober postwar building on the edge of the Luitpoldhain offers, with its large hall, one of the most important venues for classical music in northern Bavaria. The hall is named after Richard Wagner's opera "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg," which set a musical monument to the city — Nuremberg was indeed a centre of Meistersinger song in the 15th and 16th centuries, that bourgeois guild of poets and singers Wagner immortalised in his work. Besides concerts, the hall also serves as an event and congress centre and is among the largest halls in Bavaria.
The historical Meistersinger Hans Sachs, the central figure of Wagner's opera, really lived and worked in 16th-century Nuremberg as a shoemaker and poet.
