The Staatsschauspiel Dresden is the spoken-theatre division of the Saxon State Theatres and is among the most renowned stages in the German-speaking world. The house plays the Großes Haus on the Theaterstraße, opened in 1913 to plans by the architect William Lossow, as well as the Kleines Haus on the Glacisstraße. Under intendants such as Wolfgang Engel and Joachim Klement, the Staatsschauspiel developed into a laboratory for contemporary direction and new drama. The house is known for politically engaged theatre and a consistent engagement with East German and all-German history. Directors such as Volker Lösch staged groundbreaking choral productions with amateurs from the city at the Staatsschauspiel Dresden, which attracted nationwide attention. The ensemble is among the best in Germany, many of its members being graduates of the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts Berlin. The house plays over 600 performances annually and thus reaches one of the largest theatre audiences in eastern Germany.
The Staatsschauspiel Dresden is part of the Saxon State Theatres and uses the Schauspielhaus Dresden — a 1913 building considered one of the acoustically best drama stages in Germany.
