The Dresden State Operetta is the only independent operetta theatre in Germany under municipal ownership. Since 2016 it has resided in the converted Kraftwerk Mitte, a former power station transformed into a modern cultural quarter. The power station supplied Dresden with electricity for decades — today the same halls generate operetta and musical instead of power, a successful example of the repurposing of industrial architecture. The house cultivates the operetta genre as well as the musical and has made a name for itself with a lively, often unconventional approach to the form. With its own ensemble and orchestra, the State Operetta offers a popular music-theatre programme and adds a specialised, tradition-rich division to the Dresden stage landscape.
Until 2016 the State Operetta played for decades far out in the Leuben district — the move to the central Kraftwerk Mitte finally brought it into the heart of the city.
