The Kulturpalast Dresden on the Altmarkt, built in the GDR in 1969, has housed the modern concert hall of the Dresden Philharmonic since its core renovation in 2017. The monumental GDR mural "The Path of the Red Flag" still adorns the listed exterior façade — a political artwork that is a protected monument, while inside a state-of-the-art vineyard-style hall was created that places the orchestra in the middle of the audience. This contrast of socialist outer shell and acoustically acclaimed contemporary interior makes the building a unique testimony to German history. Besides the Philharmonic, the Kulturpalast also houses the central library and a cabaret stage and is a lively cultural meeting point in the heart of Dresden.
During the renovation there was long debate over whether the socialist mural could remain — it was decided to keep it as a memorial to Germany's turbulent history.
