The Santa Fe Opera, founded in 1957 by John Crosby, is one of the most famous summer opera festivals in the world. Its roughly 2,100-seat open-air theatre (today the Crosby Theatre, opened in 1998) sits on a ridge before the spectacular desert and mountain backdrop of New Mexico; a dramatic roof spans stage and audience while the sides remain open. Santa Fe is known for pairing standard repertoire with baroque opera, a tradition of Strauss, and a long line of world premieres, as well as for its renowned apprentice programme for young singers.
Did you know?
Set on a hilltop before desert and mountains, the open-air theatre sometimes lets audiences watch thunderstorms roll across New Mexico behind the stage.
