San Diego Opera, founded in 1965, is Southern California's leading opera company near the Mexican border and performs in the San Diego Civic Theatre. Over decades it built an excellent reputation with internationally cast productions. After an existential crisis in 2014, when closure already seemed decided, the company was saved by a remarkable rescue effort from its audience and supporters and reorganised. Today it combines grand repertoire with smaller, innovative formats and works that reflect its distinctive border region with Mexico.
