The Salzburg Festival is the world's most significant festival for classical opera, drama, and concert. Founded in 1920 by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Max Reinhardt, and Richard Strauss, it takes place annually in July and August in Mozart's birthplace. The festival uses several historic venues: the Grosses Festspielhaus (2,179 seats), the Haus für Mozart (1,495 seats), the Felsenreitschule (1,412 seats, carved into the Mönchsberg), and the Domplatz for the annual Jedermann performance. This founding tradition since 1920 — Hofmannsthal's Play of the Death of the Rich Man — opens each festival summer with the iconic call Jedermann! over the Salzburg Cathedral Square.
"Jedermann" is performed on the cathedral square without microphones — in rain the cast relocates within minutes to a backup venue, a specially rehearsed emergency procedure.
