The Salles de Pologne are the magnificent neo-Baroque ballrooms in the former Hôtel de Pologne on Leipzig's Hainstraße, one of the oldest streets in the city centre. The site's history reaches back to the 16th century, when the inns "Zum Goldenen Adler" and "Zum Birnbaum" stood here, where Martin Luther was already a guest in 1519. From 1819 the innkeeper Christian August Pusch combined the houses and named them Hôtel de Pologne, in memory of the Polish king Stanisław I Leszczyński. After a fire, what was then the city's largest hotel was built in 1847/48; in 1892/93 it received its Florentine-Renaissance facade by the architect Arwed Roßbach. After years of vacancy the listed monument was elaborately restored and reopened in 2014 as a festive event and concert venue. Today the Barocksaal and the richly decorated Schwanensaal host concerts – for instance as part of the Bachfest Leipzig or as atmospheric candlelight concerts – along with galas and celebrations.
