The Musikalische Komödie – MuKo for short – is the operetta and musical house of Oper Leipzig and an institution almost unique in Germany. It performs in the tradition-rich Haus Dreilinden in the Lindenau district, built in 1912 to designs by the architect Otto Gerstenberger and remodelled in 1918 into a grand metropolitan variety theatre. Since 1960, after the opera moved into its new building on today's Augustusplatz, light music theatre has been at home here; the house has borne the name Musikalische Komödie since 1968. Although part of Oper Leipzig, the MuKo has its own soloist ensemble, choir, ballet and orchestra and is perceived by audiences as an independent stage. Its productions of operetta, Spieloper and musical attract audiences from well beyond the region.
