Pittsburgh Opera, founded in 1939, is among the oldest opera companies in the United States and performs in the magnificent Benedum Center in Pittsburgh's Cultural District. Its headquarters are notable: the company is based in a converted former Westinghouse factory for railway air brakes, making it one of the first "green"-certified opera companies in the country. Alongside the grand repertoire, Pittsburgh Opera is strongly committed to nurturing young artists and to contemporary formats. In the storied steel city it is a defining cultural institution.
