Opera San José was founded in 1984 by mezzo-soprano Irene Dalis and is the professional opera company of California's tech metropolis. It performs in the historic California Theatre, a lavishly restored 1927 movie palace. The company follows a distinctive model: it engages an ensemble of salaried "resident artists" and entrusts them with leading roles across a full season – a rare form of talent development in the US. Its repertoire focuses on beloved operas from Mozart to Puccini, complemented by carefully chosen rarities.
