The New Orleans Opera Association, founded in 1943, carries on the exceptionally rich operatic tradition of a city that in the 19th century was regarded as America's unofficial opera capital. Here, in the legendary French Opera House (opened 1859, destroyed by fire in 1919), many works received their US premieres. Today the company performs mainly in the Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts, presenting grand repertoire in a city whose musical identity remains singular. New Orleans Opera combines this historical depth with a vibrant present-day operation.
