The McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton is one of the most respected regional theatres in the United States and received the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre in 1994. Built in 1930, the house grew out of Princeton University's student Triangle Club and stands right at the edge of the campus. With two stages – the large Matthews Theatre seating around 1,100 and the smaller Berlind Theatre – McCarter offers a varied programme of drama, concerts and dance and regularly develops new plays that later attract national attention. A fixture is the annual production of "A Christmas Carol". As the region's cultural centre, the McCarter Theatre combines academic tradition with professional theatre-making of the highest order.
The theatre is named after the lawyer and patron Thomas N. McCarter.
