Long Beach Opera (LBO), founded in 1979, is the oldest professional opera company in the greater Los Angeles area and known for its emphatically unconventional, avant-garde profile. Rather than a single large house, it performs at changing, often unusual sites around Long Beach. LBO specialises in contemporary opera, US premieres and rarely staged 20th- and 21st-century works, and does not shy away from radical stagings. It is regarded as one of the most adventurous opera addresses in the United States.
