Chautauqua Opera Company, founded in 1929, is one of the oldest opera companies in the United States and part of the Chautauqua Institution – a historic education and arts community on Chautauqua Lake in western New York. During the summer season the company presents opera within the Institution's dense cultural programme, traditionally in Norton Hall and the Amphitheater. Chautauqua links performance with training: young singers gain stage experience and instruction as "Young Artists". Its repertoire ranges from Verdi and Puccini to English-language productions aimed at the Institution's summer audience.
