Central City Opera is the fifth-oldest opera company in the United States; its summer festival has run since 1932. Performances take place in the Central City Opera House, an intimate Victorian theatre built in 1878 in a former gold-mining town high in the Colorado mountains. The landmark house, seating only a few hundred, offers an exceptionally immediate operatic experience. The festival is known for its young-artists programme and for English-language and traditional productions that pair the mountain town's historic setting with high musical standards.
