The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), founded in 1861, is one of the oldest continuously operating performing-arts centres in the United States and a leading international home for progressive performance. Its main building (the Peter Jay Sharp Building, with the Howard Gilman Opera House) opened in 1908. BAM is famous for its "Next Wave Festival" and for groundbreaking opera, theatre and dance – artists such as Philip Glass, Robert Wilson, Pina Bausch and Peter Brook have worked here. As a home of avant-garde music theatre and operatic staging, BAM draws audiences seeking radical reinterpretations of classics and bold contemporary work.
BAM is considered the oldest still-active "Academy of Music" in the US; its original 1861 building burned down in 1903.
