Boston Lyric Opera (BLO), founded in 1976, is the largest opera company in New England. A distinctive feature shapes its operations: it has no permanent opera house of its own and instead performs at changing venues across greater Boston – from a historic opera house to unusual sites such as a former bank or an ice rink. This flexibility lets BLO stage each production in a fitting space. Its repertoire combines beloved classics with contemporary works and commissions, and the company actively nurtures young singers.
