The Wuppertal Stages comprise the Schauspielhaus, the Opera House Barmen, and the Tanztheater Pina Bausch. The Tanztheater, world-famous through the work of Pina Bausch (1940-2009), is considered one of the most influential contemporary dance companies in the world — Bausch's choreographies like Café Müller, Kontakthof, and Nelken have shaped modern dance theatre and are shown internationally on tour. The Wuppertal Schauspielhaus is home to a distinguished spoken-theatre ensemble that combines classics with contemporary drama. The Opera House Barmen with nearly 800 seats, an Art Nouveau building from 1905, is one of the most beautiful theatre buildings in North Rhine-Westphalia and was rebuilt in the 1950s after wartime destruction. Despite repeated financial crises and city discussions about closures, the Wuppertal Stages maintain their international reputation.
Pina Bausch led the Tanztheater from 1973 until her death in 2009 — the company has performed her work worldwide ever since and is considered an ambassador of German contemporary dance.
