The Württemberg Regional Theatre Esslingen, founded in 1916, is one of the oldest and largest touring theatres in Germany. As a regional theatre it has a special mandate: it supplies over sixty performance locations between Stuttgart and Lake Constance with professional spoken theatre, bringing stage art to towns and communities that maintain no ensemble of their own. Its home is in Esslingen am Neckar, one of the few largely undestroyed medieval old towns in southern Germany. Alongside the resident operation in Esslingen, the constant touring activity is the heart of the work — a logistical feat that keeps ensemble, technology, and sets permanently on the move and makes the house the cultural provider for an entire region.
Founded during the First World War, the theatre was meant to supply soldiers and the rural population with culture — a social mandate that continues to this day.
