The Westfälisches Landestheater, based in Castrop-Rauxel, is one of the largest touring theatres in Germany. Unlike a fixed municipal theatre, it has no permanent resident audience in a single place but plays, from its home base, over a hundred towns and communities in Westphalia and far beyond. In this way it brings professional drama — from classics through children's plays to contemporary drama — to places that maintain no ensemble of their own, fulfilling a cultural-provision mandate for rural and small-town areas. Founded in 1953, the house is among the tradition-rich regional theatres of North Rhine-Westphalia and manages a logistical mammoth task: sets, technology, and ensemble are constantly on the move between the performance locations.
On some days the ensemble performs a school matinee in one town in the morning and a different play in a town fifty kilometres away in the evening.
