Volkstheater Rostock

The Volkstheater Rostock is the municipal theatre of the Hanseatic city of Rostock. It has three venues — the Großes Haus, the Ateliertheater and the Kleine Komödie in Warnemünde — and comprises the divisions of drama, music theatre/opera, ballet and dance, philharmonic, and, since the 2014/15 season, also figure theatre and the Offene Bühne, a co-production between the Volkstheater and Rostock citizens. A new venue is currently being built that is to replace the Großes Haus from 2028. For younger target groups there are children's, youth and student theatre clubs, as well as children's and youth theatre performances. Into the 19th century, travelling theatre groups performed in Rostock on the market squares, in rented halls or inns. From the mid-17th century the Ballhaus on the Johannisplatz served as a performance venue, before the Municipal Comedy House was built in 1786, which was destroyed by fire in 1880. The city theatre south-east of the Steintor was inaugurated in 1895 and destroyed by British air raids in April 1942.
