The Vorpommersche Landesbühne Anklam, founded in 1946 as a touring theatre, is the only professional theatre in eastern Vorpommern and serves a geographically extensive rural region between Greifswald and the Polish border. The house with around 280 seats at the headquarters in Anklam is the home venue; the ensemble tours through over 40 venues in Vorpommern and Mecklenburg. The Landesbühne is the cultural provider of a region that has experienced significant population decline since 1990. Despite difficult structural conditions, the house maintains an engaged repertoire with contemporary drama, classics, and a distinctive children's and youth theatre. The aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal was born in Anklam in 1848, and the town preserves his legacy.
