The Uckermärkische Bühnen Schwedt are a three-division theatre in the north-east of Brandenburg and one of the most important cultural houses in the rural Uckermark district. The modern theatre building was opened in 1983 and, with its characteristic GDR-modernist architecture, offers space for 780 spectators in the Großer Saal, plus a studio stage and several rehearsal rooms. The house is the only three-division operation with a permanent ensemble between Berlin and the Polish border. The theatre maintains divisions for drama, puppet theatre and its own philharmonic orchestra, which also functions as the region's concert orchestra. As a regional flagship in the sparsely populated north-east of Brandenburg, the Uckermärkische Bühnen fulfil an important cultural function — with numerous guest performances in small towns and villages of the district. The theatre is known for unconventional programmes and co-productions with Polish theatres from nearby Szczecin.
The Uckermärkische Bühnen Schwedt are the only three-genre theatre in the Uckermark — the peripheral location on the Polish border makes the house the cultural provider of a sparsely populated region.
