The Theaterhaus Jena is one of the most important free and municipal drama theatres in Thuringia and has been profiled since 1990 as an independent stage in the former GDR tradition. The house with around 250 seats maintains an experimental approach with a focus on contemporary drama, ensemble-developed pieces, and material from the East German experience. Several productions were invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen, particularly under the directorship of Markus Heinzelmann. The theatre understands itself as a cultural laboratory in a university city with a long humanistic tradition — Schiller, Hegel, Fichte, and Schelling all taught at the University of Jena. Friedrich Schiller taught history at the University of Jena from 1789, and the theatre cherishes this connection.
Friedrich Schiller was professor of history at the University of Jena from 1789 — the theatre maintains a special relationship with Schiller's work.
