The Theater Wolfsburg, opened in 1973 as a modernist theatre building, is the central stage of the young Volkswagen city and programmes a high-quality guest performance programme from the German-speaking region. Unlike most mid-size city theatres, Wolfsburg does not maintain its own ensemble but receives touring stages with drama, music theatre, dance, and concerts. The main hall with around 850 seats offers a modern, technically excellently equipped setting. The close connection to Volkswagen, which has shaped the house since the city's founding in 1938, is also reflected in sponsorship structures and a marked industrial proximity to cultural programming. Wolfsburg was founded only in 1938 around the Volkswagen works, making it one of Germany's youngest cities.
Wolfsburg was founded in 1938 as the City of the KdF-Wagen for the Volkswagen works and is thus one of the youngest large cities in Germany.
