The Theater der Stadt Schweinfurt is a pure guest-performance house in the Lower Franconian industrial city, supplying the region on the Main with a broad programme of drama, opera, operetta, musical, ballet, and concerts. Without an ensemble of its own, it programmes high-calibre touring productions from across the German-speaking world and is thus the cultural centre of a region known economically above all for its ball-bearing and supplier industry. Opened in 1966 in the postwar-modern style, the house is among the largest and most-visited guest-performance theatres in Bavaria and proves that a comparatively small city can sustain a sophisticated, varied stage programme if it relies on guest performances rather than a permanent ensemble.
Schweinfurt is regarded as the world capital of ball bearings — almost every car and machine worldwide contains a component from here, while in the evenings the citizens flock to the guest-performance theatre.
