The Theater Rudolstadt, founded in 1793 as the court theatre of the Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, is among the oldest continuously operating theatres in Thuringia. The house with around 350 seats is a three-genre stage with drama, music theatre, and ballet. Despite the small size of Rudolstadt (about 22,000 inhabitants), the city has a full-fledged theatre — a peculiarity owed to its historical significance as a residence city. Friedrich Schiller had his first meeting with Goethe in Rudolstadt in 1788, documented at Heidecksburg Castle. The Thuringian Symphonics Saalfeld-Rudolstadt form the orchestra. The annual Rudolstadt Dance and Folk Festival, the largest of its kind in Germany, supplements the theatre programme.
Schiller met Goethe for the first time in Rudolstadt in 1788 — an encounter that shaped German literary history and is documented at Heidecksburg Castle.
