The Theater Reutlingen Die Tonne is one of the most distinctive independent stages in Baden-Württemberg and maintains a sophisticated drama repertoire in the Swabian mid-sized town at the foot of the Swabian Jura. The unusual name "Die Tonne" (The Barrel) comes from the original performance venue of 1985 — an empty wine barrel in which the first productions took place before the theatre moved into permanent rooms. This improvised founding story still shapes the house's experiment-friendly spirit today. With a permanent ensemble and a mix of classics, contemporary drama, and in-house productions, Die Tonne has established itself as a cultural institution of Reutlingen. The theatre sees itself as a lively place of city life and proves that ambitious spoken theatre thrives beyond the major centres too.
The name was kept even after the move — as a tongue-in-cheek reminder of the modest beginnings in a real wine barrel.
