The Theater Regensburg at Bismarckplatz 7 in Regensburg is a five-division house with several venues and has been run since 1999 as an independent municipal enterprise. With around 640 performances in the divisions of music theatre, drama, dance, young theatre and concerts, the theatre reaches about 180,000 spectators per year (2018/19 season). With the 2025/26 season the Theater Regensburg is elevated to a state theatre. The predecessor of the theatre in Regensburg was the princely Thurn und Taxis court theatre, run until 1786 in the Ballhaus on Ägidienplatz. In 1803 the Elector, Archbishop and Imperial Arch-Chancellor Carl Theodor von Dalberg commissioned Emanuel Herigoyen to draw up plans for a new public theatre and assembly house, known in short as the Neues Haus. Construction was financed as a joint-stock company and completed so quickly that the opening could take place as early as September 1804. An essential feature of the neoclassical building type was the assembly hall on the upper floor. A particular feature was also the carriage passage for the better society straight through the parterre, which connected the two squares created by the theatre building — today's Bismarckplatz to the south and Arnulfsplatz to the north.
The Theater Regensburg, housed in the Classicist Velodrom building from 1804, is one of the oldest preserved theatre buildings in Bavaria — the historic hall with its three tiers of boxes is preserved almost in original condition.
