The Theater Plauen-Zwickau is a theatre run jointly by the cities of Plauen and Zwickau in the German state of Saxony. It unites the divisions of music theatre, drama, ballet and concert. The Clara Schumann Philharmonic Plauen-Zwickau is the theatre's orchestra. On 1 April 1896 the theatre association in Plauen (Vogtland) decided to build a theatre building to the plans of the architect Arwed Rossbach, born in Plauen and later living in Leipzig. The total cost was 325,000 marks, of which the city of Plauen contributed 100,000. The foundation stone was laid on 24 June 1897. On 1 October 1898 the opening and inauguration of the city theatre took place. After the Jubilee Overture by Carl Maria von Weber, the theatre director Staack gave a laudation. There followed, with Friedrich Schiller's The Maid of Orléans, the first performance. On 3 October 1899 the first opera (Der Freischütz by C. M. von Weber) was performed. In 1911/12 the German Dadaist Hugo Ball worked at the Theater Plauen as a dramaturge.
The Theater Plauen-Zwickau is an association with two venues and a shared ensemble — the Vogtland Symphony Orchestra shuttles between Plauen and Zwickau and enables three-genre theatre in two mid-size cities.
