The Theater Paderborn is one of the younger municipal drama theatres in North Rhine-Westphalia, founded in 1971. The house at Neuer Platz with around 350 seats, a modern building from the 1990s, maintains a concentrated repertoire of classics, contemporary drama, and a distinctive children's and youth theatre programme. The Studio in the Paderhalle offers space for experimental productions. Despite the relatively small size of the city, the Theater Paderborn is firmly anchored in the cultural life of East Westphalia and is also visited by schools from the entire administrative region of Detmold. The house ensemble produces about eight premieres per season. Paderborn is a bishop's city with a thousand-year history, and the theatre regularly stages religious and mystery plays.
