The Theater Nordhausen, together with the Loh Orchestra Sondershausen, forms a multi-genre theatre in northern Thuringia. Despite the modest size of the town on the southern Harz, the house offers opera, operetta, musical, drama, and ballet, supplying a wide rural region with professional stage theatre. This diversity at a small location is remarkable and makes the theatre an indispensable cultural mainstay of the region. In summer the house plays the unique open-air stage in the gondola pond of the city park — a floating stage setting at the foot of the Harz that ranks among the most unusual venues in Thuringia. With a permanent ensemble and orchestra, the Theater Nordhausen asserts itself far beyond its regional significance.
The open-air stage in the gondola pond lets performers seemingly appear above the water — in some productions the pond itself becomes the playing area.
