The Theater Lüneburg, founded in 1840, is a three-genre house with drama, music theatre, and ballet for the Northeastern Lower Saxony region. The current building at den Reeperbahnen with around 600 seats, a modern construction from the 1960s, replaced the historic theatre destroyed in the war. The Lüneburg Symphony forms the orchestra. The house ensemble produces about fifteen premieres per season — a remarkably high productivity for a mid-size city. Lüneburg itself is one of the best-preserved Hanseatic cities in Germany; the medieval old town with its brick houses forms an atmospheric setting for the theatre. With around fifteen premieres per season, the house maintains a remarkably high output for a city of its size.
The Theater Lüneburg produces about 15 premieres per season — remarkably high productivity for a city of 75,000 inhabitants, made possible by the engaged three-genre ensemble.
