The Theater Lindenhof in the tiny Jura village of Melchingen is one of Germany's most unusual theatres — a professional theatre, funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg, in the middle of a village of barely more than 500 inhabitants on the rugged Swabian Jura. Founded in 1981 by a group of young theatre-makers, it combines sophisticated, often dialect-tinged drama with deep regional roots and extensive touring across the whole region. The house is regarded as a prime example that high-quality culture is not tied to the big city, drawing audiences from Stuttgart, Tübingen, and Reutlingen out into the remote hill landscape. Material from Swabian history and literature shapes its distinctive programme.
When the ensemble performs up on the Jura, the audience on some evenings outnumbers the entire population of the village of Melchingen.
