The Theater Kiel, with its three divisions of opera, drama and ballet, is one of the most tradition-rich multi-division houses in northern Germany. Today's opera house at the Kleiner Kiel was built in 1907 to plans by the architect Heinrich Seeling and still shapes Kiel's city centre with its imposing Art Nouveau façade. After destruction in the Second World War and reconstruction, the house developed into an important cultural centre of Schleswig-Holstein. The three divisions of the Theater Kiel play, besides the opera house, also the playhouse on the Knooper Weg and the Werftparktheater for young audiences. The Kiel Philharmonic Orchestra accompanies the musical productions and is at the same time the municipal concert orchestra. Under changing intendancies, the theatre has in recent decades made its mark with a focus on contemporary opera and northern German present-day authors. With over 30,000 subscribers, the house is one of the largest multi-division theatres in the northern German region.
The Theater Kiel with opera house and drama theatre is Schleswig-Holstein's largest multi-genre theatre — the historic opera house from 1907 was built in Art Nouveau style and is considered one of the most beautiful theatre buildings in Northern Germany.
