The Ingolstadt Municipal Theatre is the playhouse of the city of Ingolstadt and was built in 1964 to plans by Hardt-Waltherr Hämer and Marie-Brigitte Hämer-Buro. It is a building of post-war modernism. The first theatre building was erected in 1873 on the south side of the Gouvernementsplatz (today Rathausplatz), the architect being Joseph Hanslmaier. The building was rebuilt from 1929 to 1930 and destroyed in the Second World War on 9 April 1945. In the post-war period a makeshift stage was set up in an inn hall (Rappensberger Keller, Proviantstraße), the first performance taking place on 20 February 1946. In 1959 the competition for a new theatre building was announced, and the planning commission went to the architects Hardt-Waltherr Hämer and Marie Brigitte Hämer-Buro together with the landscape architects Walter Rossow, Gerda Gollwitzer and Gottfried Hansjakob. The first sod was turned in December 1962, and the building was opened on 21 January 1966 with a ceremony; the first performance was Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro, a guest performance by the Bavarian State Opera. The polygonal exposed-concrete building was awarded the first BDA Prize Bavaria in 1967, and a model was shown in the German Pavilion at the World's Fair in Montreal.
Marieluise Fleißer, one of the most important German female playwrights of the twentieth century, was born in Ingolstadt in 1901 — the theatre particularly cultivates her work with the play Pioneers in Ingolstadt.
