The Theater Hof is the multi-genre theatre in the far northeast of Bavaria, supplying a sparsely populated region on the former inner-German border with opera, operetta, musical, drama, and concerts. Despite its peripheral location and modest city size, the house — with the Hof Symphony Orchestra — maintains an astonishingly broad repertoire and is the cultural anchor of a tri-border area between Bavaria, Saxony, and Thuringia. Until the fall of the Wall in 1989, Hof lay directly on the "Iron Curtain" in a cut-off marginal position; since then the theatre has again been a magnet for audiences from three federal states. With festivals, a committed ensemble, and the cultivation of even rarely performed works, it asserts a standing far beyond its regional significance.
During the German division, Hof was a dead end at the border fence — today the theatre draws visitors from nearby Saxony and Thuringia who were once unreachable.
