The Theater Heilbronn is one of the large municipal drama theatres in Baden-Württemberg and was founded in 1913. The current modern building at Berliner Platz with around 700 seats was opened in 1982 after several relocations due to wartime destruction and urban redevelopment. The drama ensemble produces about twelve premieres per season and maintains a focus on contemporary German theatre and audience-friendly versions of classics. The Theater Heilbronn has been repeatedly praised by the Süddeutsche Zeitung for its production-secure programming and is considered a reliable cultural centre for the northern Württemberg region, which otherwise has less theatrical provision. Heilbronn is the setting of Heinrich von Kleist's drama Das Käthchen von Heilbronn, a fixture of the repertoire.
Heilbronn is the home city of Friedrich Schiller's Käthchen von Heilbronn — the play is part of the regular repertoire of the house.
